HR-UP is first and foremost a fully funded joint interdisciplinary PhD program, supplemented by a professional qualification program and combined with a post-doctoral fellowship. Each year between 2014-2016, 12-14 new PhD candidates will join the program for three years. Half of these will be resident at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem as their home institution, and the other half at Freie Universität Berlin. However, they will benefit from inter-institutional co-supervision, and from mobility research periods at the partner institution. All researchers participating in the program as PhD supervisors have broad experience in supervising young scholars, both in their home countries and abroad. Furthermore, already being embedded in international research networks, they will contribute to the construction of a new international network of young and senior human rights researchers, thus enabling participating outstanding doctoral candidates to conduct their research in a unique research environment and to build up their own networks for future academic as well as non-academic careers.
HR-UP’s professional qualification strategy will prepare young scholars for national and international job markets inside and outside academia by providing them with key qualifications that go beyond their individual research projects. Its goal is to set the framework for a three-year-period during which the doctoral researchers shall conduct and ideally complete their research independently and publish and present research findings at international level.
